 7 Interesting Facts About Internet and Social Media Use Around the World That You May Not Know

1. Social media is not, by far, the main way to “discover” new products and brands online.

Internet searches remain the top choice: 36% of digital users agree. 2. India, China and Indonesia are the three countries where voice searches and virtual assistants are most used.
43% of digital users worldwide use voice assistants , but this percentage is particularly high in three countries: India (56%), China (55%), and Indonesia (54%). In Spain, 33% of internet users say they use them. Even more curious are the two countries at the bottom: in the Netherlands, only 18% of internet users use them, and in Japan, barely 19%.

As you might expect, young people between 16 and 24 years old are the most likely to turn to this technology, but the age gap is notable : only 24% of Internet users between 55 and 64 years old use voice assistants, compared to 52% of those between 16 and 24 years old.

3. Two-thirds of Internet users worldwide are concerned about how companies use their personal data.
Specifically, 64% of digital users worldwide are concerned about this issue, although fear varies by country. In Spain, the concern is higher than average : 74% of internet users say they are worried about it. The countries with the greatest concern are Portugal clean email (82%), Brazil, and Colombia (81%). And the most confident are Japan (where only 37% are concerned) and South Korea (40%).

4. One third of internet users between 16 and 34 years old watch eSports tournaments

In other words, it’s not just a youngsters’ thing: adults also consume eSports, although it’s true that after the age of 35, interest in eSports decreases across all age groups (although the interest in “traditional” sports remains). The passion for eSports is particularly notable in Asia, and especially in China and Vietnam , where 40% and 33% of all internet users, respectively, are regular users. Japan is the exception in this geographic region: only 6% of digital users are interested in them, a percentage similar to that recorded in countries like the United States and most European countries (including Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Ireland). And in Spain? Apparently, 12% of internet users are regular users of eSports , a percentage double that of other countries in our region.

5. 65% of Internet users pay for digital content, but the percentage drops to 13% in the case of online news.
Digital newspaper subscriptions are therefore still in their infancy, although some countries, such as Norway (with 35% of digital users paying to access online news), Turkey (with 34%)  , and Sweden (with 27%), are ahead in this regard. In Spain, 10% of internet users say they pay for online newspapers, compared to 50% who subscribe to other types of digital content (e.g., Netflix).
